Sylvester Shchedrin was born in St. Petersburg on February 2 (13), 1791. Father - Feodosiy Fedorovich Shchedrin, famous sculptor, rector of the Academy of Arts, professor of sculpture class. Brother - architect Apollo Shchedrin, uncle - famous in the XVIII century landscape painter Semyon Fedorovich Shchedrin.
Having entered in 1800, that is, at only nine years old, he was among the pupils of the Academy of Arts. By the time Sylvester had to choose a kind of art, he was going to enroll in the landscape class of his uncle, professor of the Academy Semyon Fedorovich Shchedrin, but he died shortly before that time (September 1, 1804), and since 1806 the young (13-year-old) artist specialized in landscape painting under the guidance of Professor M. M. Ivanov, to whom the landscape class passed.
From the very first steps, Sylvester Shchedrin discovered brilliant talents and long before the end of the course for his work, mainly for drawings from nature, he was awarded significant awards, namely, a silver medal in 1808 and a small gold in 1809.
