Tiziano Vecellio (1488/1490, Pieve di Cadore — 27 August 1576, Venice)was an Italian painter, a major representative of the Venetian school of the High and Late Renaissance.
Titian's name is on a par with such Renaissance artistsas Michelangelo , Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael. Titian painted on biblical and mythological subjects, and he became famous as a portraitist. He was commissioned by kings and popes, cardinals, Dukes and princes. Titian was not even thirty years old when he was recognized as the best painter in Venice.
Titian's grave is carved with the words: "Here lies the great Titian Vecelli — rival of Zeus and Apelles."
